‘AND your grandmother is happy, I think?’

Beneath the warmth of the Sicilian sun, Jessica smiled at Salvatore as they stood watching the family party, which showed no signs of finishing. It was his nephew Gino’s third birthday and the noise levels had been steadily increasing all afternoon, but soon the cake would be cut and then things might start to calm down!

All the different generations of Cardinis were playing some complicated Sicilian version of the game ‘catch’ and her grandmother seemed to have a natural aptitude for the game, which was making her opponents crow with disbelief.

Jessica wrapped her arms around Salvatore’s waist, her heart so full of happiness that she felt it might burst. ‘Oh, caro—she just loves it. Yet I never thought she’d leave England!’

Salvatore’s mouth curved. ‘For Sicily? And who in their right mind would turn down an opportunity to live in a place such as this?’

Who indeed? How perfect life had become—so perfect that sometimes Jessica felt as if she would soon wake up. But this was no dream; this was her reality.

Salvatore had made her his wife in a simple service in a beautiful church in Trapani. The choir’s voices had soared in that cool and sacred place, filled with the fragrance of the same white flowers which had been wreathed in abundance around her veil.

When he’d first asked her to marry him and move to his homeland, Jessica had told him that she felt bad about leaving her grandmother in England. ‘I mean, I know Sicily’s only a plane journey away, but even so I’m the only family she’s got, and—’

‘But your grandmother will come with us,’ he had said, as if no other possibility would ever be entertained. ‘In Sicily, family is everything—and every member has their valued place in it.’

Especially wives, it seemed, thought Jessica—still glowing from the passion and the tenderness with which he had woken her this morning. For a man who had fought shy of expressing love, Salvatore certainly seemed to be making up for it!

The Cardini complex was enormous—and the family owned properties on all sides of the island. There was room enough for everyone to mingle without overlapping too much. Because space was important, too. And her grandmother had already formed a deep and close bond with young Gino, which was probably a good thing, as his English mother Emma had confided to Jessica—since she was expecting a second baby.

Salvatore had dissuaded his hot-headed cousin Giacomo from buying the Phuket hotel and had instead offered him the job of replacing him as chairman in London, since he had decided to relocate to Sicily with his new bride.

And Jessica was learning Italian—or rather, she was learning to speak Sicilian since, as everyone told her rather sternly, the two were really very different.

In fact, on this earthly paradise with Salvatore by her side, she was learning so much about everything that was important. But mostly about love.
